What is black lacquered steel?
WHY CHOOSE BLACK LACQUERED STEEL?
Black lacquered steel is a popular choice for planters, raised beds, furniture and outdoor furnishings because it combines a refined, architectural appearance with high strength and a long lifespan.
The semi-matt black surface creates an elegant contrast with green plants and blends naturally into both modern and traditional outdoor spaces. Its clean, simple design also makes black lacquered steel suitable for patios, courtyards, entrance areas and interior spaces.
DESIGNED FOR INDOOR AND OUTDOOR USE
At byJEMA, we develop products that bring together functionality, durability and Danish design. That is why we use galvanized steel with a wet-lacquered finish for our black lacquered outdoor products.
The galvanized steel provides a protective base, while the wet lacquer gives the product its characteristic black finish. The result is a clean, understated design that can be used outdoors all year round, provided the surface is treated with reasonable care.
The black colour is RAL 9005 with a semi-matt finish.
BLACK LACQUERED STEEL – WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW
Placement:
Black lacquered steel products can be placed on most stable surfaces, including paving stones, concrete, wooden decking, gravel and grass. Make sure the product stands level and securely.
Surface requirements:
For larger planters, raised beds and structures, we recommend a firm, even surface. This ensures that the product is properly supported and is not exposed to unnecessary stress.
Drainage:
Always ensure good drainage in planters and raised beds. Standing water should be avoided, as it can affect plant growth and place additional stress on the product's surface over time.
Protecting the surface:
Avoid dragging the product across paving stones, concrete or other hard surfaces, as this may scratch the lacquered finish. When moving the product, we recommend lifting it or using suitable moving equipment.
Scratches and marks:
Wet lacquering provides an attractive, refined finish, but the surface is not scratch-resistant. Minor marks and scratches can be repaired using a suitable touch-up paint pen in RAL 9005 semi-matt.
HOW THE BLACK LACQUERED SURFACE CHANGES OVER TIME
Black lacquered steel has a uniform, semi-matt surface that highlights the product's clean lines and architectural shape.
When used outdoors, the surface will naturally be exposed to sunlight, rain, pollen, dirt and changing temperatures. Minor signs of use and slight changes in sheen may therefore develop over time. These are a natural result of outdoor use and do not affect the product's functionality.
The black surface may also make dust, pollen, limescale and dried water marks more visible than on materials such as galvanized steel. Regular, gentle cleaning helps maintain its uniform appearance.
HOW TO CARE FOR THE SURFACE
✅ Clean the product using a soft cloth or sponge and lukewarm, soapy water.
✅ Avoid scouring pads, steel wool and abrasive cleaning products.
✅ Remove leaves, soil and other materials that may retain moisture.
✅ Avoid impacts and scratches from garden tools, furniture and other hard objects.
✅ Repair deep scratches or damage to the lacquered finish using a suitable touch-up paint pen in RAL 9005 semi-matt.
With regular cleaning and proper care, black lacquered steel will retain its elegant appearance for many years.
PERSONAL CONSIDERATIONS WHEN GROWING VEGETABLES IN BLACK LACQUERED STEEL
Black lacquered planters and raised beds can be used for flowers, ornamental grasses, herbs and vegetables.
Good drainage and nutrient-rich soil are among the most important factors for healthy plants and good growing conditions, regardless of the material used to make the planter.
If you want to protect the lacquered interior surface from soil, moisture and garden tools, you can line the planter with landscaping fabric or another suitable barrier. The lining should be installed in a way that allows water to drain freely.
This is not a requirement, but it can be a practical solution that reduces direct contact between the soil and the lacquered surface, while also making the planter easier to empty and clean.
Ultimately, the choice of material depends on your personal preferences and the appearance you want to achieve. Black lacquered steel combines a distinctive, modern design with high strength and a wide range of applications.
BLACK LACQUERED STEEL – DESIGNED TO LAST
byJEMA's black lacquered outdoor products are made from galvanized steel and subsequently wet-lacquered. This combination provides a protective base and the characteristic semi-matt black finish.
The lacquer acts as a protective coating but should be treated with care. Deep scratches and impacts can damage the lacquer layer and expose the galvanized steel underneath. Any damage to the lacquered finish should therefore be repaired as soon as possible to maintain protection and prevent rust from developing.
For regular cleaning, we recommend lukewarm water, mild soap and a soft cloth or sponge. Harsh chemicals, pressure washing and abrasive cleaning tools should be avoided.
A SURFACE WITH CHARACTER
When black lacquered steel is new, the surface has a uniform, semi-matt appearance with a deep black colour.
With prolonged outdoor exposure, sunlight and weather conditions may cause slight changes in sheen and colour. Normal signs of use may also appear, particularly along edges and in areas that are frequently touched.
These changes are a natural part of the product's use and history. With gentle cleaning and regular repairs to any damage to the lacquered finish, its elegant appearance can be maintained for many years.
BLACK LACQUERED STEEL IN YOUR OUTDOOR SPACE: AN ARCHITECTURAL CHOICE FOR MODERN GARDENS
Black lacquered steel is an elegant choice for planters, raised beds, benches, firewood storage and other features for gardens and patios.
The black surface creates a distinctive frame around plants, highlighting green foliage, flowers and natural materials. It can also create a visual connection between different elements of the garden and architectural details of the home, such as black window frames, doors, gutters and other features.
Black lacquered steel pairs naturally with wood, stone, concrete and corten steel, making it possible to create a cohesive and personal outdoor space with a clean, modern appearance.
