Technical expertise and quality in every detail – from material to finished product

How we work with materials, craftsmanship and durability

Here you will find answers to the most common technical questions we encounter – because steel has unique properties.

When you choose steel solutions for indoor and outdoor spaces, it is not only about appearance. It is about construction, materials and the decisions that determine how a product performs – not just today, but in five, ten and twenty years.

This page brings together our knowledge of technology and quality. Here you can read about materials, material thickness, surface treatments, production and long-term use – and gain insight into why we always prioritise function over trends.

🔧 1. Materials and construction

Materials, material thickness and construction

Material selection and construction are decisive for how a solution performs over time. At byJEMA, we deliberately work with different material thicknesses and construction principles, depending on the load and intended use of the product.

The majority of our range is produced in 2 mm steel, which provides an optimal balance between strength, stability and a light visual expression. For solutions exposed to higher loads – such as the EDGY series, garden edging, bed edging and retaining walls – we use 3 or 5 mm steel, where the construction requires increased stiffness and resistance.

We also prioritise bent profiles over welded joints, as this results in stronger constructions, fewer weak points and a more precise outcome – both technically and visually.

Wet-lacquered vs. powder-coated steel

For most of our solutions, we use wet-lacquered steel – including for outdoor use. This is a conscious choice based on experience: when applied correctly, wet lacquering provides a more elastic and uniform surface that, in practice, performs significantly better over time when the steel is exposed to changing weather conditions.

Powder-coated steel is more common in mass production and often results in a thicker, more “sealed” surface. The choice is therefore not about right or wrong – but about application and the desired expression.

Corten steel – patina and lifespan

Corten steel is known for its living patina, which develops over time. The surface rust protects the underlying steel and makes the material particularly well suited for outdoor use. This means that the product changes in character, while retaining its strength and functionality.

It is important to understand that the patina is a natural characteristic of the material – not a sign of wear.

Galvanised steel – when and why

Galvanised steel is chosen when high demands are placed on durability and resistance. The surface effectively protects the steel against moisture and external impact, making it suitable for both outdoor environments and areas exposed to heavy use.

🏭 2. Production and craftsmanship

Production in Denmark

All our solutions are produced in Denmark. This gives us short decision paths and allows continuous quality control – from raw material to finished product.

Own factory = quality control

By keeping production in one place, we maintain full control over materials, processes and finish. This enables us to adjust, refine and ensure consistent quality – also for customised solutions.

Joints, bends and welds

Often, it is the details that determine whether a product works in practice. Precise bends, clean welds and well-considered joints ensure that the construction remains stable and retains its shape over time.

Why precision and tolerances matter

Small deviations can have significant consequences in use. That is why we work with tight tolerances, ensuring that modules fit together and solutions can be adjusted or expanded without issues.

🧱 3. Durability and long-term use

How products age

Our products are designed to age with integrity. Over time, materials will show signs of use – but the construction remains stable and functionality intact.

What is normal wear – and what is not

Light patination, minor marks and signs of use are a natural part of the material’s life. They do not affect strength or usability. Components that flex, lose shape or become unstable, however, are not considered normal wear.

Maintenance – and when it is not required

Most solutions require minimal maintenance. In many cases, regular cleaning is sufficient. The choice of material and surface treatment determines how much – or how little – maintenance is needed over time.

Indoor vs. outdoor exposure

Indoor solutions are exposed to different conditions than outdoor ones. Temperature variations, moisture and wear differ, which is why material selection and construction are adapted to where the product will be used.

📐 4. Custom dimensions and flexibility

When do custom dimensions make sense?

Custom dimensions make sense when standard sizes do not fully meet the requirements. This may be in spaces with specific dimensions, when fitting between existing elements, or in projects where proportions and function must be carefully balanced.

In many cases, however, the need can be met using modular standard solutions that can be combined and expanded without true custom dimensions.

How we work with custom solutions

For selected products, we offer a custom dimension calculator, allowing customers to configure and order within defined technical parameters.

Whether a custom solution is ordered via the calculator or in dialogue with us, we always prepare 3D drawings for approval, enabling a complete evaluation of dimensions, proportions and construction before production begins.

Our advice is focused on steel, construction and function – not on interior layout, placement or planting.

Standard dimensions vs. custom dimensions

Standard dimensions are thoroughly tested, efficient and based on experience. They often provide the best balance between function, delivery time and flexibility – especially as many solutions are modular.

Custom dimensions are used when there is a genuine functional or proportional advantage. The choice is not about what is most advanced, but about what works best in practice.

Typical challenges customers avoid by choosing us

By working systematically with construction, material thickness and technical frameworks from the outset, many customers avoid:

  • unnecessarily complex custom solutions
  • dimension adjustments without functional value
  • solutions that are difficult to expand or adapt later

The result is solutions that fit – both technically and in use.

🔒 5. Trust and responsibility

What can you expect in the long term?

You can expect solutions that retain form and function – even when everyday use takes its toll. Our products are designed to be used, not just to be seen.

Why our solutions are not disposable design

We do not design according to short-lived trends. Our focus is on materials, construction and function that make sense over time.

Function before trend

When function is prioritised first, a calm and timeless expression emerges. This approach allows solutions to be used and reused – even as needs and surroundings change.
